My husband, otherwise known as "Mr. Backroads" loves nothing more than a bone jarring dirt road leading...
to a bone jarring hike...
leading to pools of clear fresh water...
(oh wait, that was the wrong pool)
leading to an mysterious cliff dwelling tucked in a beautiful canyon
leading us to wonder how these amazing cliff dwellers survived perched on this precarious canyon wall...
leading to twingy muscles this morning and appreciation that I didn't have to raise my children on a precipice.

Arizona outside during winter, priceless!
You have the best adventures. The twingy muscles on the other hand do not sound fun.
Here I was expecting some satire on the upcoming AZ debate. I'm sure that's in the works too, right?
Oh so impressed I am. Did you get all sweaty and dirty? I don't remember the last time i was sweaty and dirty, but that's a story for another day. sigh...
And...when I saw that first picture I thought you were going to tell me that you went to the Renaissance Fair and your husband got a turkey leg. Those are pretty darned good.
Nawww, that was no turkey leg. Mark turned into a hunter gatherer and picked up a club after he saw a bobcat. However, no bobcats were harmed during the duration of the hike.
Sounds like your hubby and mine are of a kind.
=)
PS. And I'm willing to settle for a tie on the relative looks of our kids... (I'm afraid I'd lose the arm wrestle!)
;)
I've thought the same thing about cliff dwellings before. Wonder how many kids (and even adults) missed a step that was their last.
Mr. Backroads, huh! He looks so cute. I'm glad you didn't have to raise children on the cliffs too. How far away is this little outing.
I love the idea of cliff dwellings but the only ones I've actually seen are the ones at Montezuma's Castle. I wonder what people did when they were too old to climb the cliffs anymore.
If I'd been part of that hiking party I'd have generously and unselfishly offered to bring a picnic and icy lemonade, and to stay below to prepare for the hikers' descent.
You're welcome!
The last time we were in Arizona (Sedona, then MESA!) we took a side trip somewhere and saw some cliff dwellings. It was so interesting! My husband loves to hike. Me not so much (bad ankles and knees!) but that kind of thing is fascinating.
Aare you ready for the big debate? I just can't get enough of this stuff...
Every time I see dwellings like that, I wonder why the doors are so short. Do you think the people were really that short? Interesting!
